Paint your home the right way from the start

There are so many different scenarios in painting that I have come across over the past few years. It always keeps you busy thinking and scratching your head. One thing for sure, is that when you do it right from the start, you eliminate allot of upcoming problems, which ends up breaking the bank. I have made a list of a basic guideline when painting the exterior of a building, but first let me share some horrible scenarios.

High pressure washing a home that has allot of moisture under paint is a must

Do not try to paint over loose or bubbling paint

This is where i go back to the start. Let’s say you want to start the project of painting your new home, but before you even start painting you notice bubbles or flaking paint. Don’t even think of touching the roller or brush for now! Let’s start by prepping the walls first.

Prepping your surface

Previously painted Exterior walls should be high pressure washed before you do anything. It’s truly amazing when you look at your spread rate of paint when you hp wash your walls. It’s so obvious when you really think about it. Painting over dust and dirt versus painting over a smooth clean surface.

Step 2 – prepping your walls

We are still in prep mode for now, so leave that brush and roller. There are two different surface types of walls in our region , which are smooth or stipple walls. If you should have a stipple wall you can either stipple the walls with a tool that spreads cement by slushing it against the wall. The other way would be my way, and this is to use a rough texture paint, but before you use the texture paint it is sometimes required to build a layer of poly filler between the paint, which are still gripping on the wall and the raw piece of wall. This will help with hiding the defect when you roll over the wall with texture paint.

Step 3 – prepping your walls

Primer on the poly filler and raw pieces of wall. This will create a grip for the paint to go on top. Grab that roller and apply primer! This is it for prepping the walls. Let’s start by getting a drop sheet on the floor, I normally use a 3mx1m piece of drop sheet. After you have applied your primer, you apply the texture paint with a texture roller on the areas you have prepped.

Step 4 – Painting your walls

This is actually where the fun finally start. Grab your brush and start doing the cuttings on top and around windows. Masking tape the windows and seal it with an acrylic sealant which is paintable. Seal all the windows and paint. Grab your roller and start rolling . Give a day to dry between coats. Enjoy your newly painted walls!

Hints and Tips

When buying your tools/ rollers and brushes , please make sure to not look at your budget. The best or nothing. You end up with more problems when buying cheap equipment. Cheap brushes tend to not flex as much, and also don’t clean that well. Cheap rollers tend to roll lines when looking from the side of painted walls. A very helpful tip is to keep the roller wet as you apply the paint. A dry roller end up rolling lines. Let the roller do the work by keeping it wet , but not too wet! Buying name brand paints is a must. They charge you extra for a reason. If non of the above works for you , Contact Deluxe painters to do the job.:]
